Our Distinctives - Revival

Our final distinctive or emphasis here at Seek Him is personal and corporate revival. In his encouraging book When God Comes to Church, Ray Orlund Jr. says, “Revival is a season in the life of the church when God causes the normal ministry of the gospel to surge forward with extraordinary spiritual power.” We believe that that is a well-informed, biblical definition that makes plain the fact that revival is dependent upon God. No amount of utilized means guarantees that God will show up to His Church in power. The Lord does what seems good to Him. And what seems good to Him is good. Our vision is to see our good God revive His Church, so that she might glorify Him by becoming all that she can and ought to be.

With that being said, however, we must also emphasize the fact that although certain means do not guarantee revival, they are usually utilized by God to bring revival and therefore, must never be neglected. For starters, if the people of God do not even realize that they need revival and that God delights to visit His people with revival, they will not seek such a thing. If Christians are never called to repentace for their neglect of prayer, lackluster investment into the Word, exaltation of the status quo, and the dumbing down of vibrant Christian faith, they will never see their need for God to come down and visit them in power. They will think that all is well, rest in their merits, and end up going backwards fast. And it is our conviction as a ministry that this is, in many respects, exactly where we find ourselves now.

Consequently, we long to see the people of God revived. We long to see the Spirit of God come down in such a way that we as a church repent of our worldliness and unbelief and in turn, fix our eyes on the good of our fellow man and the glory of our God. We long to see a bold, brokenhearted people who hunger and thirst for Jesus with a joy-filled, holy discontentment that testifes to how good and satisfying He really is. We long to see a people who are jealous for the gospel to go to the unreached - both next door and to the next nation. Yes, we long to see the people of God jealously seek first the kingdom of God in all of life. And for all of this, we certainly need revival.

The popular notion of the Christian life is much too manageable today. In large part, we have lowered the New Testament standard to make it possible for natural man. The people of God need to be revived. The Spirit of God must come. Therefore, as a ministry, we cannot help but emphasize our great need and God’s great supply. We cannot help but call all people to wholeheartedly seek Him.
